Experiential Learning

A method of learning by ‘doing’ that requires Experience, Reflection, Conceptualization of Learning, and Active Experimentation. (Adapted from David Kolb, 1984)

Experiential learning:
  • Develops and expands academic, professional and personal skills and knowledge
  • Focuses on critical reflective thinking and civic responsibility by using intentionally designed assignments
  • Presents opportunities for students to experience learning in the "real world": explore professions, enhance self-confidence, learn new skills and network to future job opportunities
     
Service Learning

Structured learning through acts of service, guided by the community, in collaboration with the college. Service Learning requires both planning and reflection on the part of the student(s) involved.

Work-based Learning and Professional Development

Employment based learning in the form of Internships, Co-Ops and Apprenticeships, Clinicals and Practicums.  This can also include conferences, workshops, and job shadows.

Community Research and Civic Engagement

Individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern. This may include individual voluntarism to organizational involvement to electoral participation and requires partnership with local communities.

International and Intercultural Exchanges

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), Study Abroad, and other intercultural and/or international experiences

Innovative Classroom Experiences and Labs

Simulations, interactive demonstrations, role-playing, and lab-based instruction.  

Field Trips and Domestic Travel

Group outings to bring relevance to classroom content.This could include domestic travel, such as short-term trips within the US, visits to museums, manufacturing locations, etc.
