Journalism

Sinclair Community College offers three journalism courses: JOU 2101, JOU 2203, and JOU 2297, and an internship, JOU 2270.  Journalism 2101 provides an introduction to the newspaper business and instruction in the basic concepts and practices of news reporting and writing, including feature and online writing styles.  Students also have the opportunity to submit their work for possible publication in the Clarion, Sinclair’s student newspaper.  Journalism 2203 teaches students how to report for the Internet, write a blog, and create stories using a variety of platforms.  Journalism 2297 is a special topics course that varies according to the semester it is offered.  For example, in the 2011 summer course, students created a magazine on Sinclair’s DEI program.

Students who have successfully completed two journalism courses can apply for Journalism 2270, an internship at the Dayton Daily News or other professional journalistic experience.  This internship provides valuable, real-life experience for students who plan to pursue a career in journalism.

These courses, along with the Communication core courses, give students a solid foundation for transferring to a four-year university.
