Students who participate in Sinclair’s fine arts program within the past year are invited to submit work to the annual Fine Art Student Juried Exhibition. That year's juror, selected by an Art Department faculty member, awards Best in Show, Second and Third Place.

This 3D paper diorama has an embellished rectangle platform with a scene depicted on top of it enclosed in arched paper. The foreground has 2D trees growing along the front of the arch and quilled paper breaks the bounds of the arch. Inside is a mountainous night scene where a large 2D dragon is roaring over small figures riding horseback with weapons extended. The entire piece is dramatically backlit and the different depths of cut paper reveal a bright crescent moon, dark clouds, and mountains in the background.

Fine Art Exhibition Award Winners

A graphite drawing that initially looks like an abstracted skull, but with closer inspection the left eye is a shuttle cock, the other a candle. The nose is a beaded piece of string, possibly a bracelet and the bottom is the lower jawbone of an animal. The outline of the face is a string that is wrapped around the jawbone. The piece is rendered in a very realistic way with shadows that provide a tromp-l’oeil effect.

This piece utilizes teal, blue and orange paper, clear plastic, brown corrugated paper, and wire to create a still life of containers and brushes. The paper, plastic and cardboard are flat on the bottom surface and the wire is used to outline each object. The still life contains a water bottle with the clear plastic, a lidded can, a jar with a brush and a smaller brush all sitting on a circular surface.

Black shapes are filled in bringing the figures and shapes forward. Bright, non-realistic colors are used and the abstracted, organic shapes and figures have multiple bands of colors within the shapes.

A pastel drawing of a nude female figure viewed from a low angle. The head is unfinished and pared on top is a profile that contains an eye of Horus. The figure and the background are a vibrant red color and there are geometric structures that diminish in arching perspective from a birds eye view. Broken line martini glasses with cherries are in the foreground along with an open mailbox with a no-descript letter. There is a lot of play with opacity and overlap throughout the work.

A painting of cornstalks. The frame is filled by the greenery, with a horizontally striped blue sky seen between the leaves. A low horizon of brown earth or sloping land is divided by nine stalks that are cropped by the bottom of the image. Brush strokes are seen throughout the image, but the edges of the leaves are crisp.

A cyanotype print of a bouquet. The centered bouquet contains both roots and flowers. The roots are possibly carrot, but the flowers at the top of the bouquet look similar to chrysanthemums with white centers and darker exterior petals. The cyanotype solution was painted on the paper and the crisp white rectangle of the image is surrounded by the brush strokes of the developed cyanotype.

A triptych of photographs where at least two images are exposed on top of one another, giving eerie, ghost-like qualities to each of the scenes. The photographs are exposed with cyan, and magenta. The left photograph has a male sitting on a bench with a figure with a magenta face booking down at a bouquet on the bench. The middle photograph has a male on a bicycle with training wheels and two other positions of his face and form. The third photo has a figure leaning on the same bench as the first picture with multiple exposures in magenta and cyan.

This ceramic sculpture is an abstracted woman’s form from neck to thighs sans arms. The form is marked with slashes and small words are printed on the surface in various sizes. Words include “BITCH, DOG FACE, retard, BUTTERFACE, AND HEIFER.” The head is interchangeable with 2d- inserts. The one shown is a German shepherd-like dog, but a snowflake and cupcake are additional options shown.

This collage contains handwritten and printed newspaper clippings, signs, and posters of women’s rights issues. Painted on top of them is women’s legs coming from the top of the page, cropped at the knees, adorned in purple, white and green high heels. The left pump’s heel is on top of the head of a black silhouette that is laying down, cropped at the torso, and appears to be coming from around a corner. The right arm is reaching out towards the bottom of the work. Underneath the silhouette is a large pool of red that is dripping down the page.

This pastel piece is dramatically lit by a light source just below the image area. The portrait of a woman in thin rectangular glasses with dark hair is warmly lit by the light while the back of her hair is cooly lit by another source. The background is a very dark blue with a non-descript rectangular doorway shape. She is looking past us to the right and the chiaroscuro gives the piece an overall pensive feeling.

This nonobjective work has the feeling of an impressionistic landscape. There are points of warm yellow that read as lights in the night and the work has loose swaths of blue, green, teal and pink in the upper half, while the lower adds in muted yellows and dark red and blue shapes that could read as ships or other vessels on water. The bottom of the piece also has loose areas of bright orange and dark brown.

Midnight Hour

This vertical photo diptych has a still life of clear glasses of clear liquid in front of a person with long dark hair. In the top piece, the face, looking at the viewer, is distorted in the central glass and the hair is in the other two glasses. It is sepia toned. The second image is black and white. The head is tipped back a bit more and the reflection in the liquid is facing the figure who is mostly obscured by the glasses.

This print of a cat has a light blue background. The cat is laying down, shown from the torso up and is printed in three shades of salmon red. Chatter marks of the print block are visible throughout the print. The cat has two faces. One is relaxed and looking towards the left and the other is angry, mouth open and looking to the right. The faces are connected as if the cat was in motion or dividing itself into two. Above the cat is a crescent moon shape with rays coming off of it with a circle in the center and a diamond at the top. The cat’s head on the left has four diamonds in a diamond shape on its forehead.

2018
Fine Art Exhibition Award Winners

This dyptic is two wood framed ceramic reliefs. The one on the left is comprised of four tiles. They are arranged two wide by two tall. The heights are the same, but the tiles on the right are about one third of the entire width. The imagery depicts four dress forms in varying shades of muted green creating a diagonal from the middle left to the upper right. The background is a pale blue-green and the floor is a mottled tan. The relief on the right is the same composition, but is comprised of only two tiles, the image split in the middle horizontally. The colors are mottled with almost a sponging pattern to the piece. The colors are less distinct within the image and the saturation is more intense.

The Dressmaker's Shop

This ceramic work is three pieces grouped together. The pieces appear to be coil-built and have an organic textured surface. The forms ripple and reference underwater coral or eroded rock. The piece closest to us is the largest and has an open mouth to the viewer. It has a great deal of movement and a ribbon-like flow to the opening. A second piece is smaller but has the same undulating form, three almost petal-like extremities with an enclosed base. The third is a taller more cylindrical form with an asymmetrical V opening on top.

This collage appears to be on brown craft paper. Loosely sketched on the paper are three relaxed hands in marker with touches of charcoal. The bottom hand shows the mid forearm, wrist, and hand angled down at the wrist. It is coming in from the lower left hand side angling upwards. The middle arm is reaching from above from the right and intersects the lower forearm with its pointer and middle finger. It has a bit of foreshortening to the forearm. The top arm is angled down from the top right and overlaps the middle wrist with its pinky, ring finger and middle finger.  Thers is a lot of movement in the work and a few sketchy lines outside of the arms and hands. Touches of blue and green pastels are added to the exterior lines in areas, making the hands visually move forward. On top are four torn pieces of white paper in various widths and lengths. They have black scribbles are added in front of the hands in places and are cut to appear to continue behind the middle hand.

This drawing on paper is of the back of a seated male nude. He is facing to the left and takes up the left two thirds of the composition. He is shown from mid-thigh to almost the top of  his head. The lines are fast and sketchy, filling the page. The contour lines of the figure are in a dark charcoal while interior lines are lighter gray and move throughout the form. Loosely depicted non-descript items are in the background. An orange pastel is used to depict the shadow areas of the form and background.

This painting has a very worked surface. The piece has an organic, hazy feel and is mostly non-representational. Faint, black, broken sketchy lines break up the space and begin to depict human forms. Muted yellow heads appear throughout the work, but the rest of the space is taken up with loose strokes of white, orange and yellow moving into one another.

The Dance

A black and white photograph of an interior space that’s a bit run down. Overall the composition is very geometric. There is a railing on the right-hand side and the rest of the space is open with a lot of blank floor moving to a back wall. The framing is at an angle to the horizon, so there are a lot of angles made by the railing, support posts, and back fence against the far wall. There is a light source on the right casting mostly shadows onto the space, but long rectangles of light pattern the floor and light passing though the railing continues the patterned repetition closer to the viewer.

Three ceramic vessels in the shape of a nude woman’s armless torso from the neck to just above the belly button. Their backs are to each other and appear to be duplicates of each other. The vessel closest to the viewer is glazed in a mottled cream-gray while the other two pieces are blue-gray. On the back left shoulder of the piece in the back is a red double helix.

This pink and purple drawing on paper is of a nude figure with their right hand behind their back. The hand is facing towards the viewer and is highly rendered along with parts of the lower back and buttock. The figure is shown from the upper thighs to the upper back. The figure is situated towards the left-hand side of the composition with their right elbow pointing parallel to their left arm.  The mid and upper back are not rendered at all. Purple is used for most of the drawing, while pink is used sparingly and some fuschia is used on the hand and buttock.

A wide shallow bowl that is likely thrown. It’s body is glazed white with dark brown pine branches and needles. It has a weighty foot that is glazed a muted orange.

This collage is a 2D freeformed collage. The background is a handful of collaged cardboard rectangles that have been spraypainted in graffiti in black, green, yellow, blue, red and orange. The cardboard in some places is left showing. On top of that are three headless female forms. The ones on the right and left are facing the viewer and the middle is facing away with her arms on the shoulders of the others. At the knees their bodies dissolve into unrecognizable melting/dripping scribbles that extend beyond the cardboard backing. Three halos float above where their heads would be.

The 3rd Street Graces

A charcoal drawing of a bald man. The figure is kneeling on his right knee with his left foot on the ground, elevated by the ball of his foot. His legs are much closer to the viewer and his head moves back into diminishing perspective. The head is smaller than is realistic, enhancing the perspective.  He is resting his arms on his thighs and is nude except for underwear that has hearts on them. The hands cover most of his underware. The only other clothing he is wearing is a sock that is coming off of his left foot.

A painting of a farm landscape. In the distance a bright blue and white sky meets a row of trees that edge a farmers field. There is one small, red-roofed building in the distance. About halfway down the painting the field meets the foreground of cut grass and open dirt. On the left side is a fence illuminated from the left casting a shadow onto the grass. On the right is a tractor that is cropped showing only its left back side. It’s cropped on the bottom and reaches nearly to the top of the work. It’s bright red reflectors pop amongst the green of the landscape and tractor.

This print features a profile of a woman. The background is nondescript pinks and greens. White dots are added in the lower left corner and loose white lines activate the top left and bottom right. The top right background features black parallel lines whose connecting lines create triangles and trapezoids that break down into short lines further down the page. The woman in profile has her hair up and has stylized look, not dissimilar to cartoons from the 1930s. She is depicted from the mid torso up, is armless and nude. There is also a faint ghost print of her profile shifted to the left.

This sculpture, probably clay, is of a full figured black woman portrayed from the mid-leg up. She is wearing an off-the-shoulders dress and her weight is resting on her right leg. Her right arm is at her hip and her left arm is resting on her leg. She is looking slightly up and has a proud aura to her. Her hair is in thick braids that rest on her shoulders.

A tall, thin vase with an intricate pattern carved or impressed into the entire surface that replicates a lace or knit fabric. Elongated diamonds of various sizes are a repeated motif in three bands around the top, middle, and bottom of the piece. It appears to be a white base with brown glaze inside the impressions.

This collage features an animal made out of a variety of different animals. The head is a bird-like with double beaks and rams horns. The torso and arms are humanoid with a six-fingered bird hand. It is wearing a jacket out of flower-patterned paper, the left side a white background and right side, black background, giving a sense of illumination. The jacket is open revealing pink ribs and intestines and the pink is repeated in shapes around the beak, arm and lower torso. The creature’s flesh is yellow with spots consisting of red dots surrounded by brown. There is blood dripping from its mouth.

The Yellow Leopard Skin

This black, brown, blue, yellow, and white pastel still life has a strong cubist influence. Multiple objects intersect each other, creating new and unformed objects. A guitar, lute, the mouthpiece of a horn, and frets of a stringed instrument are jumbled with bowls of fruit and other indistinguishable objects and shapes. There is a strong indication of bright white light and blue and black/brown shadow. A few shapes are gradated while others are solid colors.

Serving Up Music

This painting has a magenta ground and features a figure looking down, relaxing back with their elbow resting on a table and their hand to their forehead. The figure’s head is at the top left of the painting, and the body moves diagonally down the frame, but is cropped at the thigh. The work appears to have many iterations of studies of different body parts: legs, feet, hands and the show lightly through the layers reminiscent of pentimenti. There is a relatively large back of the leg collaged on top of the figure’s arm and torso.

Its large architectural arch is on the left side of the frame with buildings on the right and dark, wet cobblestones in the foreground. A puddle in the foreground is reflecting the arch. A man with a fedora and bicycle looks off frame to the right. The arch and other moments of the photograph are colored with salmon and mustard green hues with other parts remaining black and white.

This is a black and white print of an astronaut suit. It is cropped to show some of the torso and the pack that is on the back of the suit. The face shield has a large reflection on it and shows a cratered red-brown moon surface. The small amount of background behind the suit is solid black.

A charcoal drawing of a two-point perspective building at night. The windows are illuminated from the inside. The building has repeating thin columns on one of its sides and the interior light illuminates the ground outside. The bottom half of the work is shadow shapes. The left side of the work has non-distinct greenery and a bright streetlamp in the middle ground. There are some smaller planters and greenery in shadow around the building.

A Moon Light Night

A ceramic sugar bowl with lid and a creamer pitcher. The Sugar bowl is round with a small foot and a low-profile lid without a handle. The creamer pitcher has a wide belly, angled foot, and narrows towards the top with a spout and handle. The glaze is a matte green that appears to break red and black towards the top of the pieces. The pieces appear to be wheel-thrown.

A paper collage featuring different views and renderings of a man’s face. The man has thick, stylized wavy hair, a short, pointed beard and a thick parted mustache. His image is cut up and spliced back together in multiple configurations and layers of portions of the face juxtaposed next to others. The middle of the collage initially feels like three portraits, but upon closer inspection, there are many more layers and details to consider.

The Writer

A drawing of an expressionless woman with a cigarette in her mouth and a furrowed brow looking strait at the viewer. She is cropped from just below her hairline to armpits and is positioned on the far left of the paper. The paper is an off-white and the drawing medium is green with dark green washes or layers to achieve an almost-black hue. There is very bright light coming from the right side of the page, leaving almost no detail to the right side of her face, while the left is in shade with strong highlights. She has a nose ring in each nostril, a septum piercing, large gauged earrings, and a lip piercing. Her hair is up, but there are a lot of flyaways. She is wearing a few necklaces, a v-neck, and a jacket.

A painting of an industrial landscape. It’s about three times as wide as it is high. There are electric lines and poles moving through the work with multiple buildings. The central one, taking up the most space, is a brick-red building with a smoke tower. Other buildings surround it. There is a chain link fence nearer to the viewer. The colors are fairly muted throughout the work with areas of pinks, purples, whites, grays and blues. Dark rectangles of windows and shadows repeat through the work.

A photograph of an old stone building. There is a door with a small wrought iron fence around the stoop just to the left of center with number 67 above it. The fence holds a mailbox that has some undistinguishable writing above “67 Brenner.” A line of footprints in the snow lead to the door from the left. There is a large window to its left with multiple panes and a vertical paned window to its right. There are double doors further to the right. To the immediate right of the central door are two PVC pipes going from above the door to the ground. The building’s façade continues up on the left and right of the photograph, but reveals a long, rectangular sliver of the sky in the middle. The photograph is full color, but the colors are all so muted, it reads almost black and white from first glance. Closer inspection reveals the snow and sky to be cool tones and the building to be warm and a gas meter on the far left has a yellow tag on it.

This print consists of two identical nude female figures, but their sizes are different. The female on the left is smaller than the one on the right. The strokes and details in the loose drawing are the same on both except the larger one on the right is missing the line that completes her toes on her right foot. The larger one also has some more shading or blurring of areas as opposed to the figure on the left. They have their right hand on their hip and look up to the right. There are also some small ink spots throughout the background.

What You Know

This sculpture of a stylized tortoise appears to be ceramic. It has a sheen and what looks to be subtle variations of a light brown glaze over the entire piece. The shell has swirls carved into its sections, the legs have scales carved into them and the head has a similar scale pattern conforming to the sections of the face. The tortoise’s head is stretching forward and slightly down. It’s a very organic, fairly realistic depiction of the animal.

A collaged piece of a variety of sketchily drawn figures. It appears to be mostly charcoal, possibly some pencil or pen. The lower half of the work is darker and more densely packed with figures and shapes. It gradates to lighter, less filled areas towards to top of the piece. The figures are loosely and quickly put on the page, and collaged together to create a busy, movement-filled work.

A glazed ceramic teapot. It is roughly egg shaped with two visible short feet attached to the bottom. The sturdy spout appears to be wheel-thrown and is angled upward from near the base. The lid has a sizeable knob. The handle is uniquely shaped. The top is a u-shape, connected to the pot relatively near the lid towards the back of the piece. One arm comes off the middle and swoops to connect to the base of the pot. The glaze is dark brown, light brown, blue and a light ochre. There are some patterns on the side of the pot: a texturized circle and a triangle with an arched base that connects the pot to the lid. The top of the knob is also texturized.

A lacquered paper collage of a young child. The background is painted with vertical strokes a variation of light red-orange and a more muted version of the same color. The child’s head takes up the majority of the work, but is positioned in the bottom left of the square. They are looking down and their chin touches the bottom of the paper with the majority of their hair taking up the work. The hair is textured and layered with wavy pattern and movement. Most of the face is comprised of flat areas of color, but others have gradations and may be made up of photographs. It appears to be windy with the child’s hair in motion, moving different directions.

A four-paneled painting. It contains 7 US military figures in the foreground and one somen who doesn’t appear to be in uniform. Five are in color and three are painted in mostly white with black outlines and colors on their patches. Two central figures are saluting each other between an American Flag. The background has a high horizon where you can see many military members who appear to be in various stages of battle or deployment. A set of blank dog tags in the same white and black as the figures come in from the top of the work.

A painting of an overpass. The colors are muted. The sky takes up the top quarter of the image and there is a sliver of a rectangle that is also open to the sky above the road. The road appears to be very steep, sloping down toward the viewer. The overpass creates two dark geometric shadows on the pavement. Brushstrokes are visible. Most of the image is taken up with solid concrete and pavement, but there is a fence with horizontal rails on the top right and a wooden fence which echoes the other, but in greater detail on the left-hand side, situated above some greenery. The steep angle of the road is counter-balanced by a sidewalk moving in a diagonal upward in the bottom right-hand corner.
