Article Club Discussion: "Remembering the Rosenwald Schools," by Marion Wright Edelman - Zoom only
Marion Wright Edelman, founder and President emerita of the Children's Defense Fund, shares the history of philanthropist Julius Rosenwald (President of Sears, Roebuck) who partnered with Tuskegee Institute's Booker T. Washington to fund the construction of nearly 5,000 schools for Black children across 15 Southern states, requiring local communities to raise matching funds and labor.
By 1928, one in three rural Black schoolchildren in the South attended a Rosenwald school, and the article traces how these buildings — once central community hubs — were largely abandoned after school integration, and are now being reclaimed and preserved as historic landmarks.

Video & Discussion: "When Every Word Doesn't Belong to Everyone," with Ta'Nehisi Coates - Hybrid
Complimentary LUNCH included!
This clip is from a 2017 stop on Coates's We Were Eight Years in Power book tour, at a Family Action Network event hosted at Evanston Township High School in Illinois. During the Q& A, a woman in the audience — a Northwestern student — referenced an email sent to students ahead of a Lil Uzi Vert concert at Northwestern, stating that white students didn't have the right to say the n-word during the show, even though the artist uses it frequently in his lyrics. She said she agreed with the policy "100 percent," but asked Coates how to explain that to white peers who feel entitled to say the word when it comes up in the music.
Please register by September 21, 2026, if you plan to join us for lunch
The video clip is brief - 5 minutes - please watch it in advance and join Michael Carter for the discussion to follow.

Discussion - Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program 1942-1964 - Hybrid
September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. The Carter Center is spotlighting "Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program," a six-poster exhibit located Our American Journey in Building 11, Room 322. The posters, from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, draw from historic photographs and firsthand accounts, tracing the story of the Bracero Program — a 22-year guest worker agreement between the U.S. and Mexico that shaped agricultural labor, immigration policy, and Mexican American communities for generations.
To complement the exhibit, Derek Petrey, Sinclair College Professor of Spanish, Chair, Department of Humanities, Government and Modern Languages will lead an open discussion on the program's complicated legacy: the opportunities it created, the exploitation the workers endured, and its lasting repercussions in today's conversations about labor and immigration.

2027 Black Unity Conference, featuring Visiting Author - Tara Roberts
Plans are underway for the 2027 Black Unity Conference. Here's sneak peek at our Special Guest and Keynote Speaker for this year's event:
Tara Roberts is a writer and storyteller whose work shines a light on the origin story of Africans in the Americas—bringing empathy, nuance and complexity to their journey. She was a fellow at MIT’s Open Documentary Lab and, throughout her career, has worked as an editor for CosmoGirl, Essence, AOL, EBONY and Heart & Soul. Tara is the first Black female National Geographic Explorer to appear on the cover of National Geographic magazine, where her story has reached over 26 million people.
Working alongside Diving With a Purpose—a team of Black scuba divers—Tara spent several years searching for shipwrecks that once carried captive Africans during the transatlantic slave trade. Along the way, she documented the stories of the divers, historians, archaeologists and communities she encountered, culminating in the National Geographic Society-funded podcast Into the Depths. This critically-acclaimed series received close to half a million downloads and was included on ‘Best of’ lists for Essence magazine and Spotify. Most recently, she was named the 2022 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year, becoming the first Black American to receive the honor. </b>
Robert's most recent release, Written In the Waters, is described as, "An adventurous blend of personal and cultural history from a star National Geographic Explorer and “a pioneer and an inspiration.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love.
