The FlexFactor program, by NextFlex, is a project-based, student-led curriculum to inform youth about careers in STEM and Advanced Manufacturing and the educational pathways available to them to obtain those careers.
The 10–12-week, semester-long programming takes students through the following steps: Problem Identification, Product Conceptualization, Business Modeling, Presentation Slides Creation and finally, via a ‘Shark Tank’ style format, a Final Pitch. A post-semester survey of the students show that their three greatest areas of learning are: Public Speaking, Teamwork and Problem Solving.
Sinclair stats since 2021:
Students visit Sinclair for a tour and also have the opportunity to interact with Industry Partners during the Sinclair/FastLane Manufacturing Day event. Some students have used the opportunity to meet with employers and have been able to secure internships and gain full-time employment. A quote from one of our recent students:
"I felt the FlexFactor experience was a great experience for me because as an engineering design major at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, we focus on product development alongside mechanical engineering concepts. Through the Flex Factor program, I was able to get many skills that transferred to my time at Rose-Hulman. Skills like teamwork, presenting and pitch design have been helpful as I worked on projects at college. As I work in the Summer of Innovation as a college intern, I hope to get students engaged and passionate about STEM education." Brian Y.
