Automotive High Performance AHPC.S.STC

Short-term Technical Certificate - 25 Credit Hours

Division: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
Department: Automotive Technology
Effective as of Fall 2012

Sinclair's High-Performance program is project-based and student-centered. Our students gain knowledge and skill in the AUT 2221 (High-Performance Engine Block & Heads) and AUT 2222 (High-Performance Engine Assembly & Dyno Testing) courses on how to develop an engine plan based on intended use, analyze engine tear down, cleaning, and inspection procedures, selection of engine components, machine to blueprint, and assembly of their own engine project. Students perform all services utilizing industry-standard equipment from companies like Sunnen, Rottler, Superflow, and others.

Our AUT 2224 (High Performance Fuel Induction Systems) course focuses on the tuning aspect of engines. The course covers carburation, electronic fuel injection tuning, nitrous oxide, superchargers, and turbochargers. Students will utilize Superflow and Mustang dynamometers during tuning as well as products from manufacturers such as Innovate Motorsports, AEM, Hypertech, and HP Tuners.

What is the program about?

This short-term certificate provides in-depth, hands-on experiences in various areas of high-performance engines, an ideal choice to supplement a degree-seeking student wishing to specialize in the engine and fuel induction areas. The program is also designed to prepare students for the ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) engine machinist series. Courses are dedicated to specific areas of engine development: engine blocks, cylinder head and valve train, assembly and dynamometer testing. Fuel systems for performance engines are covered as well.

Program Outcomes

  • Perform modifications to carburetor, electronic fuel systems and to an engine using supercharging and turbocharging components.
  • Demonstrate engine dynamometer testing and interpretation of results.
  • Analyze high performance intake and exhaust flow results through flow bench operation and testing.
  • Demonstrate machining techniques for valve, seat guide and head decking.
  • Perform engine assembly and performance testing.
  • Demonstrate skills in engine block machining, blueprinting, crankshaft balancing, connecting rod preparation and precision measurements.
  • Demonstrate porting and polishing techniques using the Mondello process.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities are available in positions for automotive service technicians in dealerships, independent shops, motor sports businesses and automotive machine shops. In addition, graduates are also employed as service managers, parts managers, sales representatives or motor sports specialist.
