Sinclair Community College Recognized in Top 10% Nationally for Affordability by U.S. Department of Education

Sinclair Community College has secured a spot among the most economical higher education institutions nationwide, earning recognition in the elite top 10% of the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center index.

This designation underscores Sinclair's enduring dedication to preserving financial accessibility for students pursuing credentials and academic degrees that drive economic mobility and rewarding careers. Factoring in tuition, books, supplies, fees, and living accommodations, while subtracting scholarships and grants, Sinclair’s net cost rests at $5,821. This total is less than half the national norm of $13,289 for comparable institutions.

"At Sinclair, we firmly believe that financial barriers should never stand in the way of potential,” said Dr. Steven Johnson, President & CEO at Sinclair Community College. “By maintaining low-cost, accessible tuition, we are doing more than just offering affordable classes, we are actively investing in our students' futures and the economic vitality of our entire region. True educational value is measured by the doors it opens, and our commitment ensures that every learner has the opportunity to gain high quality credentials, graduate with less debt, and build a prosperous career right here in the community."

Sinclair merges cost-effective tuition rates with robust financial aid packages, targeted scholarships, and structured pathways meant to minimize overall degree expenses. Learners have opportunities to accumulate savings prior to high school graduation. Through Ohio’s College Credit Plus (CCP) initiative, high schoolers routinely earn college credits through Sinclair, mitigating financial barriers and saving families significant tuition expenses. In addition, the Sinclair Foundation plays a vital role in keeping higher education within reach by securing philanthropic support, funding student scholarships, and providing critical program resources.

Through generous donor contributions and targeted financial aid initiatives, the Foundation ensures that cost is never a barrier to entry, directly contributing to Sinclair earning its place in the top 10% for national affordability in the U.S. Department of Education’s report.

“Through generous philanthropic partnerships and targeted donor-funded initiatives, the Sinclair Foundation continuously works to eliminate financial roadblocks for our student learners,” said Dr. Melissa Tolle, Senior Vice President for Strategy and Advancement at Sinclair. “Securing these critical resources ensures that tuition costs never block a student's path forward, directly empowering our institution to achieve this remarkable national ranking for affordability.”

Advanced degree tracking offers further savings. By leveraging Sinclair's university partnerships and specialized bachelor’s degree options, students can complete foundational coursework locally before transferring to upper-level programs, which helps to slash the cumulative cost of a four-year degree. The cost of a Sinclair baccalaureate degree is equivalent to the college’s 2-year degree cost.

Additionally, Sinclair embeds earn-as-you-learn components into multiple academic plans. Paid experiential learning programs enable students to collect wages while sharpening the practical competencies sought by local employers. Through active collaborations with hundreds of businesses throughout the Dayton area and Southwest Ohio, Sinclair aligns curricula with industrial demands, offering students hands-on training and professional networking channels. These corporate alliances cultivate a robust talent pool, with most Sinclair alumni choosing to live and work locally.

“By forging deep partnerships with hundreds of employers across Dayton and Southwest Ohio, we ensure our academic programs directly mirror the evolving needs of modern industry,” said Dr. Johnson.

Such widespread success and affordability have anchored Sinclair’s reputation nationally, highlighted by previous honors as a U.S. Top 25 community college for the esteemed Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which measures institutional performance in completion, student earnings, and equitable access.

“For us, budget-friendly tuition is only the starting point. True economic value comes from maximizing the return on investment our students dedicate to their learning,” said Dr. Tolle. “By shielding them from heavy debt while launching them straight into high-opportunity careers, we ensure their education translates into lifelong prosperity.”

Officially organized as a community college, Sinclair is categorized on the federal government's four year institution directory within the College Affordability and Transparency Center metrics because it extends select applied bachelor’s degree pathways to address workforce demands. This past May, Sinclair College graduated 24 students with a bachelor’s degree. Six (6) students graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Unmanned Aerial Systems, six (6) students graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Aviation Technology / Professional Pilot, and twelve (12) students graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
