Sinclair Community College, in partnership with the Voss Auto Network, successfully wrapped up its annual Automotive Technology Summer Camp, giving local middle schoolers a hands-on look into the future of the automotive service industry.
The exclusive, three-day camp ran from June 23 to June 25 at Sinclair’s advanced automotive labs in the John E. Moore Center at Sinclair’s Building 20 on the Dayton Campus. Designed specifically for students aged 12 to 15, the program blended crucial everyday life skills with an introduction to high-tech career pathways.
During the camp, participants rolled up their sleeves to learn fundamental vehicle maintenance, including how to change oil, disassemble a small engine, change a flat tire, and safely jump-start a car. In addition to these traditional mechanical skills, students experienced the cutting edge of modern transportation with ride-a-longs in electric and autonomous, self-driving vehicles.
Beyond immediate mechanical skills, the camp focused on long-term workforce development. Attendees explored future educational opportunities by learning about secondary automotive education programs offered at regional career technology centers, mapping out a clear pipeline from middle school to high-demand careers.
Due to the intensive, hands-on nature of the lab activities, capacity for the camp was strictly limited to ensure safety and quality instruction for all participants.
The summer camp was made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Voss Auto Network, an ongoing supporter of Sinclair’s automotive technology program. As the largest network of dealerships in the region, Voss operates seven franchises, including; Chevrolet, Cadillac, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, and Joe Morgan Honda. Voss Auto Network is widely recognized as a leader and innovator in the Dayton and Miami Valley area.
Students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program or specific corporate programs can gain valuable hands-on experience through the school's paid co-op internship program while achieving college credit for practical work experience. 95% of Sinclair graduating students find employment in their field within 1-month of program completion. Students earn $48K-$89K within 2-years of finishing their degree.
