An introduction to the principles, techniques and issues in the surgical and sterile processing environment. Topics include, sterile technique, packaging and wrapping techniques, sterilization methods, basic surgical instruments, basic microbiology, and hospital equipment identification. Three classroom, three lab hours per week.

- Demonstrate correct surgical sterile technique and describe how sterile processing procedures are guided by these principles.
- Demonstrate correct packing, wrapping, and preparation procedures for surgical supplies and instrumentation.
- Demonstrate correct decontamination and sterilization processes for surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment.
- Identify a core set of surgical instrumentation in each category: cutting, clamping, holding, retracting, and accessory.
- Identify equipment specific to the operating room and common patient care equipment.
- Describe basic microbiology concepts and apply them to the sterile processing department and operating room.
