NSG 1304 Pharmacology for Licensed Practical Nursing II

This course builds upon foundational pharmacologic knowledge and focuses on the application of medication therapy for common acute and chronic health conditions across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on system-specific medications, high-alert drugs, lifespan considerations, and patient education. Students apply pharmacologic principles to maternal-child, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations while reinforcing safe medication administration practices under appropriate supervision. Content is coordinated with concurrent nursing theory, lab, and clinical courses to promote patient-centered, evidence-based care.

  • Apply pharmacologic principles to medications used in the management of common acute and chronic health conditions across the lifespan as measured by unit examinations with case-based and NCLEXPN style questions.
  • Differentiate medication considerations for pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations, including dosage adjustments and safety risks, as evaluated through lifespan-focused case studies and examination items
  • Safely administer concept specific medications (e.g., cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal) under appropriate supervision as evaluated through Lab performance assessments using standardized medication administration rubrics.
  • Identify and monitor high-alert medications and patient responses to therapy as evaluated through simulation-based scenarios and targeted quizzes.
  • Provide patient and family education related to medication purpose, administration, and common side effects as evaluated using a standardized patient education rubric.
  • Document medication administration and patient responses accurately and in accordance with legal and professional standards as evaluated through Lab documentation review and structured charting exercises.
