NSG 1302 Advanced Licensed Practical Nursing Care

Prepares students for transition to practice through the management of complex and multi-system health conditions. Emphasizes leadership, delegation, ethical decision-making, and collaboration within the healthcare team. Mental health and maternal-child care continue as core integrated threads. Clinical judgment and critical thinking are applied through simulations and clinicals. The course concludes with focused NCLEX-PN preparation to support licensure success.

Outcomes

  • Apply advanced clinical judgment to recognize changes in patient condition, prioritize multiple care needs, implement appropriate nursing interventions, and communicate urgent findings promptly to the supervising registered nurse or provider in moderate- to high-complexity patient situations, as evaluated through clinical and simulation performance rubrics.
  • Promote safety and quality care by accurately administering medications, applying infection prevention measures, and identifying and reporting safety risks or near misses, as evidenced by successful completion of advanced skills validations and clinical safety evaluations.
  • Communicate and coordinate care effectively by providing accurate hand-off reports, collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team, and delivering patient and family education to support continuity of care and safe transitions, as measured by clinical and simulation evaluations.
  • Apply the nursing process in complex care situations by conducting focused assessments, contributing to care planning, implementing and evaluating nursing interventions, and reporting patient responses within the LPN scope of practice and in accordance with Ohio Board of Nursing standards, as evaluated through clinical and simulation assessments.
  • Provide safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care across the lifespan to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients with acute, chronic, and complex health conditions, adapting care to developmental stage, culture, values, and preferences under appropriate supervision, as demonstrated through clinical performance assessments.
  • Demonstrate readiness for entry-level practical nursing practice by functioning within the LPN role, managing assigned patient care responsibilities, seeking appropriate supervision, and demonstrating professional, ethical, and accountable behavior, as measured by final clinical evaluations and professional behavior rubrics.
