MAT 1520 Geometry & Statistics for Teachers

Introduction to the concepts of probability, statistics and geometry as appropriate for early- and middle-childhood teachers. An inquiry- and activity-based approach is used to explore probability concepts, descriptive statistics and basic inferential statistics, 2- and 3-dimensional geometric concepts, geometric constructions, congruence, similarity, measurement, computing area and volume, symmetry and transformations of two-dimensional figures.

Prereqs: MAT 1510 AND with a grade of C or better 


  • Prove or disprove geometric statements and the validity of logical statements.
  • Calculate the area of 2-dimensional objects and the surface area and volume of 3-dimensional objects. Explain the geometric properties of line pairs, angles, congruent triangles and two and three-dimensional objects.
  • Graph data using histograms, box-and-whisker diagrams, and stem-and-leaf diagrams.
  • Evaluate the probability of simple, compound, and independent events; evaluate measures of central tendency and variation.
  • Solve problems involving congruence, similarity, the Pythagorean Theorem, and the distance formula.
