  • Recognize major literary themes and myths of the Western Tradition and their influence on Western culture, historically and today.
  • Identify different eras of Western Civilization and the ways literature of the periods both influences and is influenced by those eras.
  • Recognize major literary genres as they have developed in the course of Western literary history and read samples of various genres.
  • Identify great writers and books in the Western tradition and examine why some works are considered classics.
