HVA 1852 NCCER HVAC Level 4B

This course covers system startup and shutdown, construction drawings and specifications, heating and cooling system design, commercial/industrial refrigeration systems, alternative and specialized heating and cooling systems, and fundamentals of crew leadership. One classroom, two lab hours per week.

Outcomes

  • Follow procedures for the startup and shutdown of hot water, steam heating, chilled water, air handling systems, cooling towers, and packaged HVAC units.
  • Interpret drawings used in commercial construction including mechanical drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and as-builts.
  • Identify factors that affect heating and cooling loads. Explain the process by which heating and cooling loads are calculated and how these calculations are used in the selection of equipment.
  • Describe systems used in cold storage and food processing systems, as well as in transportation refrigeration. Understand various types of defrost systems.
  • Demonstrate the use of alternative devices used to reduce energy consumption including wood, coal, and pellet-fired systems, waste-oil heaters, geothermal heat pumps, solar heating, in-floor radiant heating, and direct-fired makeup units.
  • Demonstrate different leadership styles, communication, delegating, and problem solving. Explain the crew leader's role in jobsite safety, as well as project planning, scheduling, and estimating.
