Survey of eastern Asia from earliest times to the present, including economic, political, religious and colonial influences on modern nations of Asia, with special emphasis on twentieth- and twenty-first- century issues and problems.

- Critically analyze primary source documents in East Asian history and use them to construct well-organized, well-argued historical accounts.
- Demonstrate the ability to utilize critical reading and comprehension skills to understand and synthesize the content of scholarly writing on East Asian history, and to evaluate the effectiveness of written works.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the evolving historical interpretations of major topics and eras in East Asian history.
- Apply knowledge of East Asian history to the understanding of contemporary global social, political, and economic issues and trends.
