Introduction to principles and medical coding for using ICD-10-CM for coding home health records. Students should possess proficiency in medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology. Additional out-of-class assignments are required. Two classroom, two lab hours per week.

- Apply ICD-10-CM coding guidelines and CMS regulatory guidelines for home health services, select and sequence ICD-10-CM codes.
- Apply national guidelines to identify what clinical information is appropriate to code.
- Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology, disease processes, procedural terms, and medical terminology to correctly interpret clinical documentation.
- Demonstrate professional behaviors, attitudes, and values consistent with and appropriate to the entry-level HIM professional.
- Apply ICD-10-CM guidelines to locate and sequence codes in simulated home health medical cases.
- Demonstrate the ability to correctly apply American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Standards of Ethical Coding to prove understanding of coding compliance, fraud and abuse.
