CAT 1631 Residential Roofing

An in-depth lecture series on residential roofing, combined with a series of lab exercises. The course will cover the following: materials and methods of residential roofing, applying underlayment, installing flashing, installing both asphalt and composite shingles, attaching metal roof panels, laying roll roofing, and gutter fabrication and fastening. One classroom, two lab hours per week.

Outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of current residential roofing techniques and terminology and identify different roofing materials and their appropriate applications
  • Properly lay roof underlayment to protect the structure and prepare roof surfaces for final covering according to industry standards
  • Install step flashing and other roof flashing components correctly and ensure flashing provides water protection at roof intersections and penetrations
  • Install common roofing types, including asphalt, composite, and metal panels, as well as follow manufacturer guidelines and industry best practices for durability and safety
  • Apply proper techniques to ensure structural integrity and weather resistance and follow safety protocols while performing roofing tasks
