CAT 1630 Exterior Finishing

An in-depth lecture series on exterior finishing in residential construction, combined with a series of lab exercises. The course will cover the following: weatherproofing methods and materials, flashing openings and preparing them for installation, installing windows and doors, attaching common types of siding, affixing trim pieces, and applying sealants to prevent ingress of moisture and pests. One classroom, two lab hours.

Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of exterior finishing principles and terminology and recognize the importance of weatherproofing in residential construction
  • Apply methods to seal structures against moisture, wind, and pests as well as select and use appropriate materials to protect building envelopes
  • Properly install residential windows and doors for alignment, security, and weather protection, and ensure installation meets building code and manufacturer requirements
  • Attach common exterior siding materials correctly and efficiently as well as follow best practices to maintain durability and aesthetic appearance
  • Install exterior trim pieces to enhance both function and appearance and apply finishing touches to prevent water infiltration and ensure long-term performance
