CAT 1620 Concrete

An in-depth lecture series on concrete in construction, focusing on mix design and composition combined with a series of lab exercises. The course will cover the following: mixing concrete, air entraining, and using additives such as plasticizers; designing and building forms; pouring and air removal via vibrations; and finishing techniques and coatings. One classroom, two lab hours.

Division: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
Department: Construction Management Technology
Repeatable Credit: No
Offered Online: No

Prereqs: CAT 1600

Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the chemical and physical properties of hydraulic cement and identify different types of concrete mixes and their appropriate uses
  • Design and build forms suitable for a variety of concrete applications and ensure forms are accurate, stable, and compliant with construction standards
  • Mix concrete correctly using proper proportions and additives as well as pour and place concrete efficiently, ensuring uniformity and workability
  • Apply methods such as vibration to remove air pockets and ensure structural integrity and perform finishing techniques and apply surface coatings to achieve desired appearance and durability
