AGR 1501 Agricultural Finance for Small Business

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of financial management principles tailored to small-scale agricultural enterprises. Emphasizing the unique financial challenges and opportunities faced by small farms and agri-businesses, the course covers key topics such as financial planning, budgeting, cash flow management, investment analysis, and risk management. Students will learn to develop financial strategies that enhance profitability and sustainability in agricultural operations, explore sources of financing specific to the agricultural sector, and analyze case studies on small farm finance management. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to make informed financial decisions, navigate loan and credit systems, and understand tax implications and regulatory requirements specific to the agriculture industry.

Outcomes

  • Explain the importance of maintaining an accurate inventory in agricultural businesses, determine appropriate times to inventory assets, and identify which assets should be included. Calculate the depreciated or market value of assets using various valuation methods based on a given list of assets.
  • Explain the uses and advantages of a statement of cash flows and describe its relationship with other base financial statements. Identify and distinguish the components of the statement of cash flows, compare it with a cash flow statement and income statement, and, given a list of income and expenses, accurately determine the cash flow.
  • Distinguish between the two main types of capital and integrate borrowing into the decision-making process. Describe and apply five key tools for evaluating capital needs in both business and personal contexts. Compare different loan types, calculate the cost of borrowing using two methods, and apply the compound interest method to account for inflation.
