The authors of this article from The Atlantic Magazine, August 2025, report that in a survey of children ages 8–12, most kids said they’d spend less time on screens if they had more freedom for unstructured, in-person play with friends—with many children preferring real-world socializing over online interaction and noting that strict supervision limits those opportunities, which drives them toward their phones as the easiest way to connect.
