Charge from President Steven L. Johnson
On October 28, 2019, President Steven L. Johnson sent the following message to 16 Sinclair faculty and staff:

Colleagues:

The American Council on Education (ACE) conducts a thorough process by which colleges can build strategic plans for international education and related activities. Sinclair was selected to participate in this process that ACE calls the International Lab. The process requires that Sinclair establish an Internationalization Lab Leadership Team.

I am asking that you serve on this team. There is an upcoming meeting with our ACE coach on Friday, November 8 that I would ask you to attend if you can so schedule.

Please let me know if you accept this request.

The following individuals have agreed to serve as team co-chairs, and have begun their initial work with ACE (see the attached “themes” document from a series of recent focus groups):

  • Michael Carter, Senior Advisor to the President and Chief Diversity Officer
  • Lisa Mahle-Grisez, Dean, Liberal Arts, Communication and
  • Madeline Iseli, Senior Vice President for Regional Strategies
  • Scott Markland, Senior Vice President for Student Development
  • Deborah Gavlik, Director, International Education

The Internationalization Lab requires working closely with ACE over the next 16 – 20 months to accomplish several goals, including:

  • Review Sinclair’s current international activities
  • Develop global learning goals and a plan for assessment
  • Develop strategic goals that will increase Sinclair’s global connections and help expand its effectiveness in international education

Overall, the project should expand Sinclair’s efforts in the areas of focus in (a) Growth, (b) Alignment and (c) Equity. Specifically, I would like the Leadership Committee to complete the following tasks:

  • No later than the end of January, 2020, provide to me an initial timeline of activities for the project and an outline of subcommittees and their objectives.
  • Provide a midterm report to me, due June 30, 2020, that includes (1) an inventory or audit of current international activities and opportunities, (2) an assessment of the college’s readiness for these activities, and (3) a list of milestones with a timeline for the final months of the project.
  • By November 1, 2021, develop a set of six to ten recommendations for college action to promote internationalization, for possible inclusion in the Board Advance
  • No later than May, 2021, submit to me a final report that summarizes the Leadership Committee’s findings and recommendations.

Thank you for your consideration in joining this project. I encourage you to think boldly and creatively about ways to expand our international capacity, and to make recommendations that will benefit our students and larger college community.
