What is the program about?

This program provides the knowledge, skills, and competencies important to an entry-level teacher working with, or planning to work with, young children, ages birth to five years old. The program includes the academic preparation required by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to meet Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher Licensure standards. Students interested in completing this degree program must get department approval to declare the major. Students must successfully pass a full criminal background investigation before enrolling in the final practicum course. A grade of "C" or better is required in all courses.

Program Outcomes

  • Graduates will identify and implement a variety of observation techniques to record the developmental progress of young children.
  • Graduates will identify community characteristics and resources to support the needs of families.
  • Graduates will recognize the diverse cultural and individual backgrounds of children and their families to create culturally sensitive and inclusive experiences.
  • Graduates will apply knowledge of child development to create and implement developmentally appropriate experiences.
  • Graduates will identify and demonstrate developmentally appropriate guidance and behavioral intervention strategies used by early childhood professionals.
  • Graduates will identify the ethical and professional standards in early childhood education, including confidentiality and continuous professional development.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may work as pre-kindergarten associate licensed teachers, childcare center directors, infant-toddler teachers, and paraprofessionals in public schools or as school age child care coordinators.


Formal articulation agreements with other colleges and universities indicate how Sinclair programs and courses will transfer to other institutions.


  • Approval of Department


The Early Childhood Education associate degree program has received approval and renewed approval (2017) by the Ohio Department of Education to provide the educational requirements for the Pre-Kindergarten Teaching License.
