PTA 1135 Introduction to Manual Therapy

Introduction to palpation and therapeutic touch; massage and manual therapy for soft tissue; patient draping; physiological effects, therapeutic applications, contraindications, soft tissue mobilization and myofascial release for the body. Four lab hours per week.

  • Students will be able to assess the patient’s readiness for treatment, identify the appropriate target tissue for manual therapy intervention, and assess treatment outcomes.
  • Students will be able to competently apply manual therapy techniques, assuring patient comfort and privacy, appropriately monitoring the patient’s response to treatment and adjusting accordingly, and documenting the treatment.
  • Students will be able to select manual therapy interventions to address tissue impairments that are appropriate for the target tissue in various stages of healing.
  • Students will understand the principles of manual therapy and how to appropriately apply them to patients with tissue impairment in various stages of healing.
