Pride Beats the Univ of Penn JV 79-75

Dayton, OH – Sinclair (7-2/0-0) Men’s Basketball defeated the University of Penn JV team Wednesday afternoon 79-75, the game was played on Penn’s campus at the famed Palestra.

This was the third meeting between the two teams and a rematch from last year’s game in which Sinclair won 79-58.  Played as part of a Men’s doubleheader, Penn’s varsity took on cross town rival Villanova University.  The game between Penn and Villanova is part of a long and storied Philadelphia basketball tradition known as the Big Five; the five local universities (Penn, St. Joseph, Drexel, LaSalle & Villanova) play each other for all the bragging rights to the city.

Sinclair dominated the glass and the free throw line by out rebounding the Quakers 57-28 and making more free throws than the home team attempted: SCC-19-34 / Penn 13-16.  Still Penn kept the game close as the Pride went cold from the 3pt line (2-13  15%) and Penn heated up (8-20  40%).  The combination of hot shooting on the Quakers part and key missed free throws by the Pride down the stretch, kept Penn in the game till final buzzer.

Leading the way for the Pride with another double - double, Darrien Wilkins (6-5/Cincinnati Princeton H.S.) pumping in 24 points and 12 rebounds.

As one of those stats that you can only shake your head at; Sinclair played Penn last year on December 8th and won with a score of 79-58, returning this year on December 8th and also scoring 79 points in the victory.

Game day started out early as the Pride headed over to the campus for a campus tour.  The office of admissions assigned two young men to give the Pride a full tour of all the academic and social facilities on site.  Ranging from academic buildings to the athletic field (Franklin Field) and even over to student housing (the Quad), Sinclair spend a good part of the morning learning and experiencing life on an Ivy League campus.

After Sinclair pulled out a four point victory, the Pride walked a few blocks downtown for another Philly tradition (Steak)!  Thanks to Coach Wright (Villanova Head Coach), his recommendation of Abner’s was spot on.

As the team loaded the bus for the long trip home on Thursday, the Pride had a few more items on the Philly itinerary.  Check List: Win against Penn in the Palestra (CHECK), Campus Tour (CHECK), Philly Cheese Steak (CHECK), Watch a Big Five Game – Penn/Villanova (CHECK), Philadelphia Historical Sites (Thursday Morning).

The Pride spent Thursday morning touring a few of the key historical sites.  The day started off with a stop at the Liberty Bell as the team was able to get within feet of the actual bell.  Just across the street, the team had a guided tour of Independence Hall as well as Congress Hall.  Standing in the same room where many of this countries key documents were forged really seemed to get the attention of the group.  In Congress Hall, the Pride was able to see where the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate was housed during the early days of this government.

The morning finished off with a trip to the National Constitution Center, where the Pride was able to see and hear key items of this country’s history.

Sinclair will begin a four game home stretch on Monday when they take on Wilmington College at 7pm.
