The Sinclair women’s basketball team (10-8, 1-0), coming off their first conference win of the season last Saturday at Lakeland, hosted Clark State (2-8) on Wednesday in their first home game of the new year. Sinclair had a very successful night both offensively and defensively capitalizing on many Clark State turnovers.
Sinclair struck first as Ashley Morrow knocked down two free throws after a Clark State foul. Morrow was fouled again and sank both free throws again and the very next possession drove down the lane for a lay-up putting Sinclair up 6-0. Clark State tied up the ballgame 8-8 with 15:17 to play in the first half. Clark State took the first lead of the game 10-8 with 15:00 left in the first half. Sinclair took the lead again with key shots from Ashley Morrow and O’Sha Owens. Sinclair forced Clark State to call a timeout when they had back to back layups and a lead of 22-14. O’Sha Owens drained a jumper and Sinclair looked to take a comfortable 32-19 lead with 6:25 to play in the first half. With 4:28 to play Darnesha Wesley got a steal and took in down the court and was fouled, making the basket but missing the free throw and Sinclair led 39-21. Darnesha Wesley hit a three with under a minute to play, and Sinclair took a 50-28 lead. Sinclair’s fast paced tempo and aggressive play proved to be too much for the Eagles in the first half. Turnovers plagued Clark State in the first half as they had 24. Sinclair took a twenty point lead (50-30) into the locker at half. O’Sha Owens led Sinclair with 12 points and four rebounds. Sinclair shot 53.8% in the first half.
Sinclair started the second half with the same intensity that they brought in the first half. Sinclair continued to take advantage of Clark State turnovers going up 54-34 with 17:00 to play. Breanna Ball made an uncontested layup off of a Jenae Curtiss steal and Sinclair led 58-34. Sinclair just continued to pull away off of Clark State turnovers and they could not keep up with Sinclair. Alex Catron hit a jumper giving Sinclair their largest lead of the game 71-39 with 9:00 to play. Ashley Morrow hit a three and Sinclair led 74-39. Darnesha Wesley went coast to coast off a rebound and got fouled made the shot and the free throw grabbing the 83-47 advantage. Sinclair rolled on to victory winning 87-47. Sinclair shot 73.3% from the free throw line.
Sinclair was led by Breanna Ball (5-6/FR – Belmont H.S., Dayton, OH) who tallied 18 points. O’Sha Owens (5-4/FR – Elida H.S., Elida, OH) had a double-double with 16 points, 16 rebounds and also had five assists and six steals. Ashley Morrow (5-6/FR – Springboro H.S., Springboro, OH) added 16 points and nine rebounds. Darnesha Wesley (5-7/FR – Meadowdale H.S., Dayton, OH) put up a career 14 points and added six rebounds.
Sinclair will be on the road Saturday, January 18 and Wednesday, January 22 where they will travel to Columbus State and Edison Community College. They will return to defend home court on Saturday, January 25 when they take on Lakeland Community College at 2:00 PM, preceding the men who tip-off at 4:00 PM. All home games are held at Sinclair Community College in the gymnasium in building 8.
