Study Tools for Students

Academic:

1. Strategies to improve the understanding of lectures

a. Read assignment -at least preview for framework of lecture.
b. Use unit headings as questions-listen to lectures for answers.
c. Use questions at end of chapter to get scope of material.
d. Make list of special vocabulary words and their definitions.
e. Before class review notes from previous class; tie lectures together.
f. Every two or three study sessions, spend at least 15 minutes reviewing lecture notes, notes from reading or high lighted text.

2. Strategies to improve the understanding of the text.:

a. Use SQ3R for reading (Survey chapter, Questions at end of chapter, Use heading of each unit as a question, Read to answer the question, Recite questions and answers, Review every two or three study sessions.
b. Check words in chapter with glossary for specific meaning. Don't guess, be specific.

Study Skills and Habits- Tools and Strategies

1. Note Taking Tips

a. Develop note taking system (Cornell, Visual Mapping)
b. Listen actively -interact with faculty and lecture material.
Cues, body language, questions.
c. Get enough information to remember, not whole lecture.

2. Test Preparation

a. Prepare for test the day you start class.
b. Study to answer questions.
c. Focus on understanding concepts rather than memorizing.
d. Study frequently and review every two to three days. Avoid cramming night before; get a good night's sleep.
e. Use a study guide.
f. Go to test prepared: pencils, erasers, ruler, small dictionary.
g. Don't do last minute studying before the exam. Relax, take a walk, talk to friends.

3. Test Anxiety

a. Learn stress reducing techniques: deep breathing, relaxation exercises, visualization, self talk to eliminate distracters.
b. Believe that you will be successful.
c. Chew gum.

4. Test Strategies

a. Read directions, read over test first, go through and answer questions you know first.
b Pacing -complete test in this order: T-F, matching, multiple choice, fill-in, essay last.
c. Multiple choice: read question, watch for limiters and key words. Have answer in your mind before looking at choices. Look at M.C. as multiple true-false.
d. Know the definitions of test terms.

5. Time Management

a. Know your personal time commitments-don't over schedule
b. Set up study time for each day: guideline 2 hours study for every hour in class. Develop a to-do list.
c. Set up a study plan for the quarter-use each course syllabus as a guide for due dates.
d. Create a special place for study or use the LRC.
e. Set an objective for each session-a focus.
f. Organize your studying: the most difficult subject, the one you like the least, first.
g. Never study more than one hour at a time-take a break.
h. Develop lists and flash cards to use for instant reviews for small blocks of time: on the bus, driving to school, between classes.
i. Set the goal at the beginning of the quarter, reward yourself when you reach it.
