The following are crime prevention tips for people with disabilities from the National Crime Prevention Council:
- Stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings.
- Be realistic about your limitations. Avoid places or situations that put you at risk.
- Be familiar with campus. Check out the locations of Campus Police and hallway phones. Know which areas of campus are likely to be well populated.
- Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket. If you use a wheelchair, keep your purse or wallet tucked snugly between you and the inside of the chair.
- Select a book bag that can be securely shut.
- Consider carrying a cellular phone.
- If your disability prevents you from speaking loudly, consider carrying a whistle or other means of attracting attention in an emergency.
- Carry medication in a secure location. Consider renting a locker through Student Activities.
