Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Process

Crisis Flow Chart

The Department of Counseling Services has the primary and initial responsibility for any non-violent crisis situation that occurs on the Sinclair Community College campus and is not criminal in nature or a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.  The counseling staff makes up the Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Response Team (NVCIRT).  They will be contacted through a hotline or pager by campus police, students, staff, or faculty when a non-violent crisis situation arises.  Information about this hotline will be publicized to the Sinclair community by OPN, President's Bulletin and letter/flyer. The hotline is number 512-6555 which can only be accessed within the Sinclair campus.   All routine and off-campus calls to the department will continue to be made through 512-2752. When the hotline is not answered the call will go to the assigned staff's pager.  The pager number (851-6694) will be published for the campus to contact the appropriate team member that will be on call.

The NVCIRT currently consists of Dr. Bobby J. Beavers, Gwen Jones and Omar Powell.  They are the first point of contact for non-violence crisis situations.  These individuals have been trained in non-violent crisis intervention -- a two-day intensive training.  The NVCIRT will also be assisted in non-violence crisis situations by other Student & Academic Support Services Team members who have received the training.  The other individuals who completed this two-day training are:  Robin Cooper-Moore and Mary Jenkins.  Dean Cole and Pam Combs have received previous training in crisis situations.  If Counseling Services staff is not available, then, the above individuals can be backups.  They will be available on an as-needed basis.

The Counseling Services Department will provide coverage for any non-violent crisis situation during the following hours:

                        Monday through Thursday - 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

                        Friday - 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

                        Summer hours (June-September): 8:00-4:30 p.m.

The Campus Police would need to handle situations during any other hours.  When the Counseling Services department is closed after 7:00 p.m., then Campus Police would be contacted.
