You will need to bring at least $1,000-$1,200 with you for an apartment or room deposit, usually equivalent to one month's rent, a deposit of up to $100 for each utility service (telephone, gas, electric), and for a motel room while you look for an apartment or room. Include money to purchase bed sheets, blanket, dishware, eating and cooking utensils, as well as used furniture if the apartment or room you rent is not furnished (desk or table, chair, bed, dresser). There are some thrift stores that sell used furniture, household goods, and clothing (Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, and Goodwill). Plan to bring at least $1,000 to $1,200 for these deposits and to purchase furnishings.
