Placement Testing

The placement test is an untimed computerized assessment in math and/or English that Sinclair uses to ensure that you enroll in the classes that are right for you. There is no cost for placement testing. Upon completion of the placement test, your Academic Advisor will review your scores with you and help make appropriate recommendations for course registration or review.

Please note all students must present a valid, government-issued picture ID to test.  Students who do not have a picture ID must instead present their social security card OR birth certificate plus one additional item with their name on it (i.e. report card/transcript, library card, even a piece of mail).

Be sure to call 937-512-3000 to confirm if you need placement testing.  If you are in high school, graduated within the last two years, attended college before, and/or took a placement test at another college or university within the last two years, it is possible you may not have to test.  Additionally, if you did not graduate from an American high school, please contact the International Education office at 937-512-3060 to verify which test(s) are required.  Finally, if you think you may qualify for testing accommodations (i.e. you had an IEP or 504 Plan in high school), please contact the Accessibility Services office before testing at 937-512-5113.

Once you confirm what test(s) you need to take, decide whether you would like to test remotely (from home) or in person.  Appointments are not required for in-person placement testing on Main Campus.  Stop by the Welcome Desk on the first floor of Building 10 between 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday with your picture ID to test (since testing closes at 5 p.m., be sure to arrive early enough to allow at least one hour per test).  If you wish to test at a regional center, please call your preferred location to schedule an in-person placement test (appointments required at all regional centers).

If remote testing, follow these tips:

  • Check your email.  Important test information will be sent by your proctor to your Sinclair email (@sinclair.edu) the day before your test.  This information is only sent to your personal email if you supplied that email when making your appointment.
  • Be on time.  Test sessions start promptly at their appointed hour.  Be sure to log in on time or risk having to reschedule.
  • Prepare.  Install Zoom (if necessary) before testing, and follow the instructions in your email to check system compatibility.  Test in a well-lit room free from distractions and have your ID ready.
  • Seek assistance if needed.  For assistance the day of your test, please call 937-512-3445.
  • One appointment is required per test.  If you plan to take more than one test in a day, please schedule your tests at least two hours apart.

Academic Testing on Campus

Academic testing is for registered students who need in-person proctored testing, students who have been approved to make up a classroom test and students requiring accommodations who are registered with Accessibility Services.  Please contact your course instructor for more information.

Academic testing is offered on a walk-in basis on Main Campus, but appointments are required at all regional sites. Call your desired testing site for more information.

If you live more than 60 miles from a Sinclair campus and need to take an in-person proctored test, please email testcntr@sinclair.edu with your name, course number and testing information at least 10 days prior to your test date.  Testing Center staff will provide information about finding an in-person proctor in your area.
