Career Research

The Career Services office utilizes OCIS as its primary research occupational tool, because it focuses on Ohio specific salary and job outlook information. Other good sites exist that provide the similar information indifferent formats. Below are some of the most notable career research sites.

Provides information lookup about careers and occupations based actual Occupational Title, Skills or Qualification, or Job Code Classification (4 indexes provided)

America's Career Infonet
A multi-functional system that not only provides information on occupations, but also info on trends in occupations (fastest growing, highest paying) by state.It also provides content on employment skills needed to get certain positions, career assessments, and many other useful tools.

Occupational Outlook HandbookK-12 version (new)
The Occupational Outlook Handbook, produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is a nationally recognized source of career information, designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives. Revised every two years, the Handbook describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations. The new K-12 version has a easy to use search interface that looks up relevant occupations by interest.

Ohio Labor Market Information
For number crunchers. The State of Ohio Office of Workforce Development gathers and publishes data on Industry and Employment Trends. These statistics are Ohio specific. The 2004-2006 Short Term Employment Trend Report (24 page pdf) is but one reports that analyses occupational trends and statistics. A commercial website that includes modest information about occupations and companies, along with information about job-seeking advice (resume writing, interviewing). This site also has a job board searchable by several criteria.
