Prior Learning Credit Options

There are several options available for students with prior college-level experiential learning that they wish to submit for Sinclair course equivalency:

  • ACE/CREDIT
ACE (the American Council on Education) provides access to transcripts for several of its programs. If you have taken training through your employer or a specialized training provider that has been evaluated by ACE, in many cases ACE has established credit recommendations that can help you get that training translated into college credit.
  • Advanced Placement Program
The College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers students the opportunity to complete college-level studies and exams while attending high school. The Program provides examinations on 33 introductory courses in 19 fields. The primary goals of the AP Program are to strengthen the secondary school experience of students who are ready for college-level work and to provide administrative support for granting credit or placement to those students in their freshman year of college. Sinclair faculty have reviewed the AP exams and determined which Sinclair courses will be awarded for academic credit. To have these courses applied to your Sinclair record, you should bring or send a copy of your AP scores to the Academic Advising Center, Room 11-346, Attention: Vicky (fax #937-512-5054). Include your name, address, and Sinclair I.D. number. There is a processing fee of $10 per course for each course applied.   Additional information about the Advanced Placement Program can be found at http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/program/index.html
  • Articulation (Incoming)
Sinclair has a number of agreements with local high schools, professional organizations and other licensing and certifying organizations, which state that successful completion of those training programs and achievement of professional credentials may earn Sinclair course equivalency (ordinarily, high school programs must demonstrate a “C” or better in the articulated subject area).
  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
These nationally standardized exams may be equivalent to certain Sinclair courses. CLEP (College Level Examination Program - http://www.collegeboard.org/clep/) exams are not given at Sinclair, but they are given at the University of Dayton and at other sites across the nation (currently around $70 per test). Contact the Prior Learning Credit Options facilitator to see which subject areas carry Sinclair course equivalency, and the minimum scores required for credit. There is a fee of $10 per course for these credits; they would show a grade of “Y,” indicating proficiency at a level of “C” or better. These are not always transferable to other colleges, but they count toward fulfilling Sinclair graduation requirements.
  • Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES/DSST)
These nationally standardized exams may be equivalent to certain Sinclair courses. Most DSST (DANTES Standardized Subject Test) exams (except Principles of Public Speaking) can be given in paper form at Sinclair (for Sinclair credit or to be sent to other colleges), or in electronic form at U.D., Indiana Wesleyan and other sites (www.getcollegecredit.com, currently $80 per test).
  • Prior Learning Portfolio Evaluations
This approach is available for people who have learning in subject areas for which no test is available or practical. These areas may include Internships, Communication Arts, and many Marketing and Management course areas. You may wish to check with the department chair of the area you wish to challenge, to make sure his or her faculty are willing and able to evaluate your learning in formal written form, as prepared in the EBE 100 Prior Learning Portfolio Development course.  The evaluation fee is $45 per course.  These evaluations result in a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F, but ONLY grades of A, B or C are applied to your Sinclair record.
  • Sinclair Proficiency Exams
Sinclair faculty have developed proficiency exams for many course areas.  If you have competency but no transferable credit or other documentation, you still may be able to demonstrate your knowledge by testing.  Contact the Prior Learning Credit Options facilitator to see if the course or courses you need are available for evaluation by testing.  The fee for testing varies from course to course; they range from $20 to $80 per exam, but the vast majority are $40.  These exams result in a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F, but ONLY grades of A, B or C are applied to your Sinclair record.  They are identified on your record as Proficiency credit, but having a letter grade makes them more likely to transfer to other colleges than if they carried a "Y" grade.
