Royal Patronage

Part IV
Royal Patronage in Europe During the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages in Europe, the Church and Royalty dominated. There was no separation of church and state, so many pieces patronized by royalty were religious in nature.

For example, the barbarian King of the Goths, Theodoric commissioned the building of the church of S. Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, Italy, and the Byzantine emperor Justinian commissioned the building of the church known as Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (Istanbul) in the sixth century (see the exterior photo to the left and teh interior photo to the right).

Charlemagne patronized the building of monasteries, and of his palace chapel in Aachen, Germany. King Louis IX of France commissioned the building of his own palace chapel in Paris, Ste.-Chapelle, to house relics that he brought back from the sixth crusade (note this beautiful interior photo of Ste.-Chapelle).
