What is the program about?

This certificate provides the fundamental courses needed to prepare for any of the multiple Computer Information Technology programs or areas of specialization. It allows students to experience introductory courses in various disciplines as preparation for their chosen degree objective. All courses in this certificate apply to the various degree programs in Computer Information Technology and Computer Science.

Program Outcomes

  • Utilize modern programming techniques and languages. Demonstrate understanding of the systems development methodology used in creating software systems in current environments.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of various computer operating systems (including Windows, Linux, and Mac), application software (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases), and the underlying hardware elements of modern computers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the hardware, operating system software, and protocols that enable modern networks.

Career Opportunities

Entry level positions in various areas including user support, system administration and network management will be available to students completing this certificate. Many employers are quite willing to provide job specific training to employees already possessing the broad technical experiences in this certificate. Students completing this certificate and a specific Computer Information Technology or Computer Science degree program will be further prepared for specific employment opportunities.

Credentials

One of the courses in the certificate (CIS 1130) will help students prepare for the CompTIA Network+ certification exam. This is a vendor neutral certification widely accepted in the Information Technology field.
