What is the program about?

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) short-term certificate will provide students with both theoretical and practical applications of GIS. The certificate will cover the foundational concepts in GIS, including the principles of cartography and GIS, database management and analysis, data acquisition, and manipulation of georeferencing and geocoding.

Program Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to use maps and other geographic representations, geospatial technologies and spatial thinking to coordinate multiple geographic representations, evaluate the quality of geospatial data, and analyze geographic questions and communicate information.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of foundational concepts and applications of GIS technology. More specifically, students should demonstrate hands-on GIS experience; use geospatial technology to develop solutions to issues facing communities and industry; manage data by evaluating data and its sources, maintaining data, and joining and relating data; generate data by collecting field data electronically, digitizing data, geocoding data; process data by validating data, creating/updating data, creating/updating metadata, georeferencing data, and converting data from various sources to data useable by GIS; analyze data by conducting geoprocessing, network analysis and geostatistical analysis.
  • Demonstrate professional effectiveness and teamwork by exhibiting leadership, cooperation, and making productive contributions to group written and oral assignments. Students must also demonstrate a respect for diverse view points within the group.

Career Opportunities

Students completing the certificate will have the technical skill set in GIS required to perform a variety of entry level positions in a variety of arenas, including, regional and local government agencies, business and community organizations.
