What is Model UN at Sinclair?

Model UN is more than simply learning about the United Nations and the role it plays in international relations—it's about learning and perfecting many critical life-skills including negotiation and bargaining, extemporaneous speaking, parliamentary procedure, debate, group facilitation, dynamic leadership,  understanding body language, brokering deals, researching and writing position papers, developing policy, negotiating and writing resolutions and reports along with a variety of sales and marketing techniques.  In short, it's about how to live a successful life and get people to want to do what you want them to do—whether it’s a boss, subordinate, co-worker, parent, spouse, child. It’s a toolbox full of great success tools which anyone can use in every aspect of his or her life.  And it’s great stuff that simply isn’t taught anywhere else.

This is the fifth year Sinclair has participated in the Dayton Model UN Conference and the second at the national conference in New York City during the week of  April 22-26, 2008. We will be joining nearly 3000 college students from over 250 colleges and universities from every corner of the globe.  During this week, students will function as diplomats representing their assigned country and through a process of debate and negotiation, attempt to draft resolutions capable of solving real world problems.  Then comes the challenge of getting these solutions approved by a majority of the delegates present via the complex voting process necessary in the international community.

To prepare students for this experience, Sinclair offers a three hour course each Winter quarter along with regular club meetings and activities throughout the year.  Our students also participate in the local DAYton Model UN Conference (DAYMUNC) February 8-10 as part of their preparation for the national event. The program is open to all Sinclair students regardless of major. The course work teaches the skills and conference participation reinforces the learning process by building the student's confidence and affirming that their new skills work.

How can I help?

Our biggest hurdle to overcome is funding.  The college has offered as much support as it can during these difficult times and we are pursing several fund raising efforts but it simply isn’t enough.  Quite frankly, we really need some outside sponsorship to ensure our efforts are successful and we can bring recognition back to our community.  The cost to send the team is a little over a thousand dollars per delegate for the weeklong trip.  Further compounding the problem is the deadlines for payments are fast approaching—we are at risk of losing our hotel rooms and airfares are rising weekly. Would you consider sponsoring one or more students to go?
