Trivandrum

· is the capital of the state of Kerala with a population of 600,000 and is located on the southwestern side of India on the Arabian Sea.
· Agriculture is the main economic activity in the state-coconut palms, coffee, tea, pepper, sweet cashews, rubber, bananas, etc. and exotic woods from its forests are in high demand-ebony, teak and rosewood.
· The majority of the population is Hindu, but about 25% are Christian.
· Kerala is a highly politicized state and very religious tolerant.
· The state is the most literate in India.
· There is a unique situation in the state as there is a large number of unemployed in the state, and the high level of education among those looking for jobs can produce a tense situation from time to time.
· Cochin (Kochi) is the major port of the state and a naval base with a population of 1.1 million.
· Chinese fishing nets, introduced by Chinese traders, line the harbor entrance and are used at high tide. It takes a team of four men to operate them.
