New Delhi Cityscape

· is the capital of India with a population of 8.5 million.
· Old Delhi has been inhabited since the 3rd or 4th century and is made up of several cities that have been incorporated into the city of Delhi.
· New Delhi was built under British rule and was to be a grand design with open spaces and broad boulevards. Construction began in 1913 and the city was inaugurated in 1931.
· The city is the political seat of power for the country and is a major economic and transportation hub as well.
· It is a popular tourist destination with many temples, historical/cultural sites and museums to be seen.
· The economic and population centers are in Old Delhi with the government functions found in New Delhi.
· There is a contrast here as Old Delhi is a mass of congested streets running in all directions. New Delhi provides a sense of openness and quiet with streets in more of a grid pattern.
· Delhi lacks adequate mass transit and you will find a diverse mixture of vehicles competing for space in the streets.
