Frederick Smith Auditorium (building 12)
7:00 PM
Many Jewish musicians and artists from Prague were sent to Theresienstadt, among them Hans Krasa, who wrote the children's opera Brundibar. It tells the story of two children who battle an evil organ-grinder (with a Hitler-like mustache!) for the right to sing for pennies in the town square. The opera was performed some five dozen times in the camp, and Ela Weissberger was one of the child actors. Today, in her eighties, she travels the United States, helping various theatre groups mount performances of Brundibar. In March, the Victoria Theatre Association will present the opera, and Mrs Weissberger will be here. See the Victoria's website ( http://www.victoriatheatre.com) for details on the performances and on the accompanying educational programs co-sponsored by the Dayton Holocaust Resource Center, the K12 Gallery and other organizations.
A reception will follow this event. Meet Mrs. Weissberger in person!
Parking: in student parking lot A on Fifth Street ($2.00) or under the David H. Ponitz Sinclair Center (building 12) on Fourth Street ($10.00). We will also sell passes for the Building 12 underground garage for $2, after the event. You can park on the street free after 6PM at parking meters.
