Results of Survey on Faculty Senate Priorities for 2006-2007
(compiled on September 13, 2006)

Listed below are twelve issues (labeled A through L) that Faculty Senate might work on in the coming year. After reading the items in the list, please answer the three numbered questions that follow the list.

  1. Make recommendations concerning the administration’s proposal for reorganizing the Instruction Division, and work on implementation details after a reorganization plan is adopted.
  2. Monitor and make recommendations concerning the college’s efforts to ensure alignment of Sinclair’s programs with community needs and to restore a net operating margin of 3% to 5%.
  3. Thoroughly review the Moran report and recommend which of Dr. Moran’s recommendations should be adopted.
  4. Working with Sinclair’s legal counsel, thoroughly review the Faculty Handbook, recommending changes to make it more consistent and more useful.
  5. Recommend a new section of the Faculty Handbook describing the operation of the Faculty Issues Team. (What are its responsibilities and powers? How does it operate? How are its members selected? What is its relationship to Faculty Senate and Faculty Assembly?)
  6. Recommend a faculty retrenchment policy.
  7. Recommend policies on scheduling and assignment of off-campus courses (both at Learning Centers and in anticipation of Warren County campus).
  8. Recommend policies on scheduling and assignment of courses in mini-terms and B-terms.
  9. Explore creating a formal mechanism for full or partial representation on Faculty Senate for non-tenure-track faculty.
  10. Recommend revisions to the Faculty Assembly’s constitution & bylaws: combine into one document, update obsolete terminology, remove inconsistencies with Faculty Handbook, clarify.
  11. Enhance Senate’s website to provide faculty with more information, including any data or proposals discussed by the Faculty Issues Team, text and status of all recommendations forwarded by Senate to the administration, electronic version of the Faculty Forum, …
  12. Explore ways to encourage greater attendance at Assembly meetings and, more generally, to increase the level of involvement by faculty in governance.

Q. Are there other issues that should be high on Faculty Senate's list of priorities? If so, what is the most important one? If not, then skip this question.
  • L
  • As DL enrollment increases, students need to be better trained/screened prior to enrolling for online courses. We need a process and procedures to ensure our online students are successful.
  • K
  • A
  • J
  • Not at this time.
  • Issues regarding Faculty pay and making it more consistent with other community colleges in the state. Finally, incorporating more scholarship into tenure and promotion.
  • issue D above: Sinclair legal counsel represents the administration not the faculty; consider obtaining other counsel
  • Merit
  • The merit system and the lack of resources for faculty senate to do it's job
  • Salary and Compensation
  • G and H
  • L: getting more faculty involved in Faculty Senate, esepcially in light of issue F.
  • Without faculty attendance to vote on/talk about/etc. the reamining issues, all of which are critical, we will be unable to impact any of those reamining
  • Items C & D above
  • Wages and Fringes
  • D, E, J, and K should represent the second tier of issues for Senate attention.
  • b then a
  • Early Retirement
  • enhance Senate's website
  • Academic calendar ready by beginning of academic year for instructional and personal planning
  • Salary issues
  • Review Faculty Performance Appraisal and Promotion Process
  • Uniform implementation of policies across divisions (such as office hour policy)
  • Conduct a no confidence vote on Steven Lee before he totally screws the college and leaves for some political office with 3 years severance pay.
  • More Personal Leave for faculty
  • Item L, above. Overall, faculty awareness and participation in the changes that are on the horizon are vital. We want to keep Sinclair a school of excellence and we want to keep our jobs! I would suggest this overriding concern as a general guideline when choosing issues to address this year. It seems that we might be at a turning point in SCC's history. I have confidence in the Senate and our new faculty leadership. Thanks.
  • Denise's concern about the faculty hiring and workload policies is a broad issue that should be explored in depth b/f the senate makes any recommendations. At this point, I don't even know if there are any "policies" in place, but I agree that this concern should be an important Faculty Senate issue--if not this year, then soon, very soon. Thanks to all of you.
  • h
  • C
  • Web instruction and proper compensation for additional workload caused by technology (conversions) and new emphasis on the Master Course model (loss of faculty freedom)
  • Enhancing Supplemental Retirement
  • cost of living
