Data on Growth of SCC Faculty

Fred Thomas, May 21, 2003

I had trouble reconciling the data about new tenure-track faculty hires that was presented to Senate on May 14th with what I remembered about straight counts of Sinclair's full-time faculty. There is no question that the original data is very useful for its intended purpose--understanding how retirements, separations and new hires impact the average faculty salary. My concern is that the data seemed to suggest a greater increase in total tenure-track faculty than I thought had occurred. I still can't totally reconcile the numbers, but share here the related data I took from the current budget materials on our intranet at http://our.sinclair.edu/sites/IPR/pb_manual_2004/appendix/enrollment-staffing-analysis03.pdf

Key "bottom line" stats include the fact our fall student FTE has grown 20.9% from 1998-99 to 2002-03. During that same period, the number of tenure-track faculty increased 8.7%. The total full-time faculty has nearly kept pace with increases in student enrollment with a growth of 17.3%, but that is because of an increase of 73.9% in the number of ACFs. The number of FTE students per tenure-track faculty has increased by 11.2% since 1998-99.

The figures here are based on "filled positions," rather than budgeted positions. The number of vacant tenure-track positions was nearly constant over the period, however, so that was not a substantial factor in the change. Special Adjuncts are not included in either data set.
