Sinclair Board Approves Raising Tuition

DAYTON, Ohio (09/16/09) – At its meeting yesterday, the Sinclair Board of Trustees approved a 3.5 percent tuition increase for the college. The college has held a steady tuition rate for 12 of the last 19 years.

Sinclair’s tuition and fees are still controlled and capped by the Ohio legislature. However, all Ohio public colleges and universities are allowed to raise tuition up to 3.5 percent.

“After much Trustee discussion, research and the creation of several financial models, the board voted today to implement a tuition increase; the first in years,” said Larry Porter, chair of the Board of Trustees.

Beginning in this winter term, Sinclair will be implementing a tuition increase resulting in modest per-credit hour increases for students as follows:

For Montgomery County residents, Sinclair remains the lowest cost college in Ohio by at least 15 percent. Financial aid will cover these increases for an overwhelming majority of the high-need students who receive financial aid.

In a separate vote, the trustees also approved the transition from quarters to semesters with a cut-over occurring in the fall term of 2012. The preliminary budget of about $1.9 million was approved as part of this plan, with the understanding that much less might need to actually be expended to balance future budgets.

“We are committed to ensuring that the transition to semesters will not adversely affect any students who are midstream in their academic programs,” said Dr. Helen Grove, provost at Sinclair.
