‘Deranged Mathematics’ Coming to Sinclair

DAYTON, Ohio (04/30/10) -- The Sinclair Community College Mathematics Department will hold its annual Mathematics Department Colloquium on Friday, May 14. The theme of this year’s event is “Deranged Mathematics.”

The colloquium will be from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in Room 1001, on the lower level of Building 1.

Imagine you have a deck of cards and you shuffle them as many times as you wish. What is the likelihood no card remains in the position that it started in? Dr. Adam E. Parker, assistant professor of mathematics from Wittenberg University, will lead attendees through a series of mathematical formulas to determine the surprising answer.

The event is free and open to the public. All interested students and faculty from area schools and colleges are invited to attend. For more information, please call the Sinclair Mathematics Department at (937) 512-2313 or e-mail vickie.lair@sinclair.edu.
