Sinclair College President Appointed to AACC's National Executive Committee

Sinclair President Steven Johnson has recently been appointed to the national executive committee of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) based in Washington, D.C. AACC represents the interests of over 1,000 community colleges and their twelve million students across the nation. The seven-member executive committee has the authority to act on behalf of the full board, and provides leadership over initiatives impacting the accessible and affordable education provided by the nation’s community colleges.

As a member of the executive committee, Dr. Johnson serves as the chair of the national workforce and program initiatives of AACC.  This committee works to frame policy positions, advocate for national funding and policy for community colleges.  Areas of focus include student apprenticeships, certificate training, and other workforce-aligned initiatives.  Johnson is also the past co-chair of the AACC 21st Century Community College initiative.

“I am so pleased to help with the emerging innovations to fill the nation’s skills gap,” said Dr. Steven Johnson, president of Sinclair Community College. “This is a critical time for America’s community colleges, as education and the needs of students and employers are changing at a rapid pace. I look forward to working with leaders across the country to create more student apprenticeship programs and implement initiatives that are workforce-aligned and will positively impact the students we serve.”

Dr. Johnson tenure as Sinclair’s president began in 2003, and he is Ohio’s longest serving president of a public university or college.  He serves as the chair of the 23-college president’s council of the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.  He is the past chair of the national board of the League for Innovation in the Community College.  As the president of Ohio’s lead college for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supported Completion by Design initiative, Johnson has worked to help improve state and national systems helping more students obtain more college education faster and for less money.

The American Association of Community Colleges is a national organization representing the nation’s over 1,200 community, junior and technical colleges. The colleges are the largest and fastest growing sector of public higher education, annually enrolling almost half of all U.S. undergraduates. For more, see www.aacc.nche.edu .
