How do I know if I am eligible for graduation and when should I begin the process toward graduation?
You need to contact your academic counselor/advisor during the second year of your academic program, if not sooner, to have a degree audit run. Apply to graduate during the semester those requirements will be met.
What do I do if I miss the deadline to apply for graduation?
Deadline dates are published in the class schedule. If the deadline is missed, the student may apply but will be considered an applicant of the term in which the application is received. Example: Should one miss the fall application period and apply during the spring application period, that person would be considered a spring applicant and will be finalized for spring term.
Is there only one ceremony?
There is only one formal commencement ceremony. Students are recognized individually for their accomplishments by the Board of Trustees, the President, Provost, Divisional Deans, and in the presence of their family and friends. This formal ceremony will be held in May of each year and is available for any two-year degree-seeking students who have applied either in Fall, Spring, or Summer. Even though there is only one formal ceremony, students may apply any semester, during the published dates, to have their graduation form processed.
How soon after graduation, will I receive my diploma?
Please allow at least a month after the term is completed for the diploma to be mailed. The diploma will be mailed to the address on the application. If for some reason there is a change in the address, please notify the Records Analyst in the Office of Registration and Student Records at least 30 days before the end of the application term.
What if I want to participate but I am not graduating in Spring?
Any two-year degree-seeking student may apply to participate. Students apply, by the published deadline, during the semester in which the requirements will be fulfilled. On the form, indicate the wish to participate in the ceremony, fill out the cap and gown form, and submit the completed forms to the Office of Registration and Student Records. The application will be processed for the term received, the academic record will be updated accordingly, diplomas will be distributed, and arrangements will be made for the ceremony.
If I complete my degree in the fall term, when can I order graduation announcements?
Announcements are only available for the May graduation ceremony.
When can graduation announcements be picked up? How many will be given out and is there a fee? Can extra ones be purchased if desired?
Graduation announcements are available beginning mid-April.
What is the color of the cap and gown that will be worn during the commencement ceremony? What is the color of the tassel?
The color of the cap and gown is black and the tassel is yellow.
How are qualifications for honors and high honors determined for commencement? If I qualify to graduate with honors or high honors how will I be recognized for this during the commencement ceremony?
Honors and high honors for the commencement ceremony are determined by the cumulative grade point average at the end of the winter term. To qualify for honors a student must have a cumulative grade point average between 3.400 and 3.899. To qualify for high honors a student must have a cumulative grade point average 3.9 or better. Graduates with Honors or High Honors will wear a gold honor cord draped along their neck.
I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, who do I contact about getting my stole?
If you are a member of Phi Theta Kappa at Sinclair Community College in good standing (at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average; there are no exceptions to the grade point average requirement) you need to stop by room 8025I and complete a form indicating that you are graduating. Upon graduation, you will receive a gold seal via the mail to place on your diploma. You also may purchase a stole, tassel and honor code to wear at graduation from the Phi Theta Kappa office in room 8025I. The cost is $37.00 and checks should be made out to Phi Theta Kappa. All purchases must be made 1 week prior to graduation. We will not be able to accommodate anyone past this date. When will I receive information about the commencement ceremony?
Information about the commencement ceremony is sent 30 days before the ceremony and will answer the questions about picking up your cap and gown, announcements, rehearsal, and what is expected of you on the actual day of commencement.
What is a graduation announcement?
It is a formal announcement of conferring of degrees. They also contain a card that indicates date, time, and location of the graduation ceremony.
When and where do I pick up my cap and gown?
You can pick up your cap and gown at the Tartan Campus Store, during regular store hours Monday through Thursday and until 11:00 am on Friday, the week of the commencement ceremony. If your schedule prevents pick up during the times mentioned above, the attire will also be available on-site after the graduation rehearsal and before the ceremony.
Would I be able to purchase just a tassel? I don’t wish to march in the commencement ceremony.
Tassels are available for pick up at the Tartan Campus Store after the commencement ceremony. There is no charge for students who paid the graduation fee but did not participate in the ceremony.
