Student Achievement In Reading (STAR)
Student Achievement in Reading (STAR) is a national professional development initiative to improve reading education for intermediate level adults.
As STAR programs, teachers and administrators are trained and supported in:

Conducting diagnostic reading assessments to identify students' instructional needs in all four reading components (Alphabetics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension)

Using the results of diagnostic assessments to plan instruction.

Developing and delivery lessons using explicit instruction.

Using evidence-based reading strategies.

Monitoring student progress.
Six states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Ohio and South Dakota) participated in the national pilot from 2004-2007. Ohio had nine pilot sites. In FY08, Ohio added six new STAR programs. These sites attended three Insitutes and received technical support from the SWRC. To see the Ohio STAR programs, click here.
