Teaching Vocabulary
Vocabulary—the words the reader knows and understands—is the best single predictor of comprehension. Learners need instruction and practice in both word breadth (the number and kinds of word meanings known) and depth (flexibility and precision of word-meaning knowledge) to improve reading.
As students transition through NRS levels or move onto post-secondary training/education, the vocabulary they encounter will both broaden and deepen.  How can ABLE instructors help their students navigate the thousands of words they will be exposed to with these transitions?  SWRC suggests you explore these resources to get started:
The Role of Vocabulary in Academic Success by Dr. Kate Kinsella (Scholastic Webinar)

A Way with Words: Strategies for Strengthening Adult Learners' Vocabularies (Thinkfinity Online Course)

Building Academic Background Knowledge (Media Package)

Bringing Words to Life:  Robust Vocabulary Instruction by Isabel Beck et al (Book)
