Physics
Fundamental Science… Discover the Mystery at Sinclair!
The Physics department at Sinclair Community College offers an associate degree program with an emphasis in physics, as well as a certificate and associate degree emphasis in computational physics. The goal of our program is to achieve your interest, education and appreciation of the subject. Our department houses well-equipped labs and classrooms that provide an environment where physics can be experienced closely through hands-on activities and demonstrations. We also utilize computer-assisted data acquisition techniques to make the subject matter more accessible.
With our state-of-the-art facilities, small class sizes and focused curriculum, you will gain a breadth of knowledge in this science and its related subjects. In addition, our program shows you how physics applies to the world around you and demonstrates how it meshes with your career and professional goals.
This program might be for you if:
- You are interested in the study of science, particularly of natural science, matter and motion.
- You like to explore and experiment to learn about the behavior of world around you.
- You enjoy astronomy, philosophy, weather, and other sciences and want to test the validity of your own theories.
- You often wonder about the world around you—the structure, evolution, and even environmental problems.
Our programs are designed for more than just students interested in obtaining a degree in physics. Many students choose the field because they wish to work in an area of science and understand the importance of an increased understanding of mathematical methods and physics. Our programs also attract individuals interested in pursuing the first two years of a program leading to a professional degree in mathematics, science or medicine.
Certificate Programs
Short-term Technical Certificate
Computational Physics
This certificate is designed for an individual to attain concrete knowledge of modeling and simulation as applied to physics. While the discipline specific course in the certificate is computational physics, this certificate exposes the student to a wide variety of modeling a simulation techniques used in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and several Engineering fields. The skills attained will prepare the transfer student for entry into the minor program offering by the Ralph Regula School of Computational Science and will strengthen the in-service professional s knowledge of the fast growing field of modeling and simulation.

Degree Programs
Associate of Science - Associate of Science: Area of Emphasis in Computational Physics
The Associate of Science: Area of Emphasis in Computational Physics program is for the student who plans to transfer to a four-year college or university with a major in Physics and a minor in Computational Physics. This program is designed to prepare the transfer student to take course work at the level of a third year university student in Physics. Course sequences are designed to transfer the basic requirements of baccalaureate institutions belonging to the Ralph Regula School of Computational Science consortium. The student is strongly advised to consult the particular school he or she will be entering as well as a Sinclair academic adviser, before signing up for different courses. The student who wishes to earn an associate degree in Computational Physics must complete the last thirty hours at Sinclair in order to meet residency requirements. Exceptions to this requirement must be approved in advance in writing by the dean of Science, Mathematics and Engineering.
