The academic programs offered by Sinclair’s Health Information Management department are designed to prepare you for this ever-changing and constantly growing field, including focus on new health information technology. Our coursework covers a variety of topics, including health information management, medical terminology, computer applications, health informatics, ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT medical coding, health care statistics, health care reimbursement, continuous quality improvement, resource management, and other pertinent information. With the variety of topics covered, you can be certain you will be prepared for your next step.
In addition to our many course offerings, Sinclair houses a state-of-the-art health information management laboratory and a virtual laboratory for online coursework. With this facility, you will have the opportunity to actively work with medical information and receive hands-on experience with the newest health information management available.
The experience even goes beyond campus, with direct clinical experience in the Miami Valley area health care facilities. For those of you who live outside the area, clinical experience may also be arranged at a facility closer to where you live or work.

The programs offered in health information management are excellent choices for immediate post-high school education, re-entry into the workforce or even a mid-life career change alternative. Graduates of our programs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, physician offices, home health agencies, insurance companies, and even government agencies.
Our degree program is also now offered as a completely online program, in addition to the traditional in-class offering. You now have the ability to select the format (in-class or online) for each individual course you take on a quarter-by-quarter basis. With even more control and flexibility, you can choose how you earn your degree!
Certificate Programs
Short-term Technical Certificate
Medical Coding & Billing Specialist
The Medical Coding and Billing Specialist certificate prepares students for entry-level coding and billing positions in physician medical offices, medical insurance companies and outpatient billing services.
Students will develop skills to accurately determine diagnostic and procedural code number assignments that impact medical reimbursement. Skill sets include application of ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS coding systems; medical terminology; anatomy and physiology and disease processes; processing insurance claims and reimbursement practices.
The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist certificate can be completed in the traditional classroom setting or completely online or a combination of both delivery systems.
Students must receive a grade of C or higher in all courses in the MCBS.STC and have a GPA of 2.0 to receive the certificate.

Degree Programs
Associate of Applied Science - Health Information Management
Health Information Management (HIM) professionals are experts in the field of managing and protecting patient health information, administering computer information systems and coding the diagnoses and procedures for health care services provided to patients in accordance with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, accreditation and regulatory requirements of the health care delivery system.
Students must declare HIM as their major, complete all required prerequisites, possess and maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or better. The curriculum includes a professional practice experience (PPE). There are two cohorts of students accepted each fall term. A limited number of students is accepted for the local cohort students (students who live generally in the 14-county area surrounding Sinclair) who are assigned to local PPE sites. The remote cohort students (students living generally outside of the 14-county area surrounding Sinclair) are responsible for securing an appropriate medical facility for their PPE.
Most HIM courses are only available for enrollment once accepted into the program. All courses in the program are available online. Students may enroll in courses face-to-face on campus, online, or a combination. Face-to-face courses on campus are only available during the day. Students are generally required to complete their PPE during daytime business hours.

Articulation & Transfer Agreements
Sinclair works directly with many four-year schools in Ohio and beyond to ensure the college credit you earn will transfer easily to those schools. By developing articulation agreements, formal agreements between colleges detailing the recognition of college credit between the schools, you will know you are meeting the requirements needed at the four-year school of your choice. Ohio Transfer Module
The Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science degree programs fulfill the requirements for the Ohio Transfer Module at other public colleges and universities. Students in applied associate degree programs may complete some individual transfer module courses within their degree program or continue beyond their program to complete the entire transfer module.
Upon completion of the Ohio Transfer Module, students will be able to enter most Ohio four-year colleges and universities as a junior with your general education requirements completed. Find out more about the Ohio Transfer Module »
